Mountain Lake Country Club

Mountain Lake Country Club, located in Lake Wales, Florida, is a private community renowned for its historic significance and exceptional golf course. Established in 1915 by Baltimore businessman Frederick S. Ruth, the community was meticulously planned by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., with the golf course designed by the esteemed Seth Raynor.

The 18-hole golf course, which opened in 1916, is celebrated as one of Florida’s finest. Raynor’s design incorporates classic template holes, such as “The Alps” and “The Biarritz,” inspired by renowned European courses. At the heart of the community stands the Mountain Lake Colony House, a Mediterranean Revival-style clubhouse designed by Olmsted Jr. Completed in 1916, this three-story structure features pergolas, loggias, and a barrel-tile roof, serving as a central gathering place for members and their guests.

Mountain Lake has been home to notable figures, including Edward W. Bok, the Pulitzer Prize-winning editor of Ladies’ Home Journal, who established the nearby Bok Tower Gardens.
